ESO Empire

Dungeon Magicka Sorcerer

Markarth Patch

Build Introduction:
Welcome to the Dungeon Magicka Sorcerer build “Dark Tempest” for The Elder Scrolls Online! Magicka Sorcerers can be one of the easiest and most simple Classes to learn, however, this does not mean that they are less viable in late game content. Sorcerers provide the only source of Minor Prophecy in the game through the “Exploitation” passive in the Dark Magic skill line. They also have cheaper Ultimate costs, skill costs, and Spell Damage bonuses for slotting Sorcerer Class Skills. Your Health as a Sorcerer is quite easy to sustain due to a skill that will heal you every second that you are dealing Critical Damage while it remains active. This proves to be very useful in Dungeons as it will take stress off of your Healer and you can safely focus on the mechanics of the encounter.

This build has been tried and tested extensively just like the rest of the builds you will find on ESO Empire have been. In the “Dark Tempest” build you will find that you are very capable in dealing with both boss fights and hordes of enemies. You will successfully utilize all benefits listed above as well as some not mentioned provided that you follow this easy to learn guide.

Race

Breton

Increase Max Magicka by 2000

Increases Spell Resistance by 2310 and 100 Magicka Recovery. The Spell Resistance granted by the effect will be doubled if you are afflicted with Burning, Chilled, or Concussed.

Reduces the Magicka cost of your abilities by 7%

High Elf

Reduces damage taken by 5% while you are using an ability with a cast or channel time. Restores 645 Magicka or Stamina, based of whichever is lowest, after activating a Class ability. This effect can occur once every 6 seconds.

Increases Max Magicka by 2000.

Increases your Spell Damage by 258.

Dark Elf

Increase Max Magicka and Max Stamina by 1875.

Increases your Flame Resistance by 2310, gain immunity to the Burning status effect.

Increases your Weapon and Spell Damage by 258.

Bretons may lose out on the extra damage provided by other Races, however, Magicka Sorcerers do not have the best sustain in the current patch and you may need some extra help. Bretons provide much cheaper Magicka skills, extra Magicka Recovery, and the highest Max Magicka increase available from Racial Passives. The flat bonus to your Spell Resistance is very noticeable and even more so when you have a Status Effect placed on you.

High Elves are highly recommended for Magicka Sorcerers. Like most other Classes, you will fail to utilize the damage reduction portion of the first passive you receive due to rarely using abilities with cast or channel times. You will be able to make use of the sustain portion of that passive as Sorcerers benefit greatly from slotting more Class skills. High Elves also grant the highest Max Magicka and Spell Damage increases you can receive from Racial Passives.

Dark Elves are another competitive Race. They offer great increases to your Maximum Magicka and Stamina. They still provide the highest available Spell Damage increase from Racial Passives. The extra Stamina, Flame Resistances, and Burning Status Effect immunity bonuses allow you stay alive more reliably.

It is best to invest all available points into Magicka, this is because more than just your resource pools are affected by your Attributes. Your Max Magicka also increases how much damage your skills do in combat. This can be seen on any skill description in game. If you find that you are in need of more Health, try using a Health or a Prismatic Glyph on either your Head, Chest, or Leg piece. The goal for DPS is to have about 16,400 Health with a food buff active.

While at first the bonus you receive from Attribute Points may not seem like much, it is important to note that the value per point will increase until you reach CP300.

Blue CP150-160 Food

Blue CP150-160 Food is a crafted food in ESO, and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. This food is best if you already have great sustain, as it will boost your Health and Magicka stats higher than Epic quality foods will. If you are using this food and find yourself with low sustain or needing to Heavy Attack quite often, I would suggest trying out Clockwork Citrus Filet or Witchmother’s Potent Brew.

Clockwork Citrus Filet

Clockwork Citrus Filet is a crafted food in ESO, and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. This food is the best available to Magicka DPS as in the current patch, sustain can be an issue for a lot of builds. Since it is not a cheap food, I would suggest only using it when you may be entering what you would consider to be more difficult content. This is a min/max food and does not offer much more than Witchmother’s Potent Brew.

Witchmother's Potent Brew

Witchmother’s Potent Brew is a crafted drink in ESO, and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. Use this food for Trials as it provides great boosts to the things you need most as a Magicka DPS. While this food may be a step down from Clockwork Citrus Filet, it is much more affordable to use in every encounter and you will not notice much of a difference. If Gold is not an issue, try using Clockwork Citrus Filet instead.

Essence of Magicka

Essence of Magicka potions are generic potions found in ESO as they can drop from a variety of sources. You will often come across plenty of these during a regular play session. Use these during non-Veteran content to help you get into the habit of using a potion on cooldown. Using these potions without Critical Surge active will result in a DPS decrease.

Essence of Spell Power

Essence of Spell Power potions are crafted potions in ESO, and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. I highly suggest using only these potions in all content as they provide sustain and necessary buffs. If Gold is an issue, try using the generic Essence of Magicka instead.

Maw of the Infernal summons a Daedroth for 15 seconds and it is extremely potent in Dungeons. It deals great Single Target and AoE damage, as it swaps between three different attacks, Fiery Claw, Jagged Claw, and Fiery Breath. It usually stays in melee range, and if your Tank can group enemies effectively, the Fiery Breath will make short work of them. If you are familiar with Light Attack weaving, the Daedroth will spawn naturally in combat, and after it “dies” it can be summoned again immediately. The one downside of this Monster Set is that it will always spawn in front of your Tank during boss fights.

Medusa grants less than 1% less Critical Chance than Mother’s Sorrow, but allows you to slot another skill instead of Channeled Acceleration because Minor Force will be up 100% of the time. This set only comes in Heavy Armor, so you must use the jewelry. Wearing the cuirass and greaves will grant a nice boost to your resistances. Using this will force you into a 5 Light, 0 Medium, 2 Heavy (5L/0M/2H) configuration which will decrease the potency of the Max Stamina and Max Magicka granted from the Undaunted Mettle passive by 2% and reduce your Stamina Recovery by 2%. However, the benefits of running a 5L/0M/2H configuration are extra resistances and more sustain from taking damage.

(Perfected) False God’s Devotion is another staple standard for Magicka DPS in general. It offers Minor Slayer, much needed Magicka sustain, and some extra Critical Chance. Both the Perfected and non-Perfected sets are displayed because the difference between the two is very little, that said, if you can manage to obtain the Perfected version, do so.

(Perfected) Crushing Wall is from (Veteran) Maelstrom Arena. You can easily do without the Perfected version as it only adds Spell Penetration to your Back Bar skills and Magicka DPS can already Over Penetrate very easily. The only time you may find the non-Perfected version at a disadvantage is if your Tank does not have the Roar of Alkosh set.

Grothdarr is a relatively easy set to acquire that deals great AoE damage and is even easier to proc. Some enemies in Dungeons move around quite frequently, and your Tank can’t do anything about it, this makes Grothdarr a great choice because the AoE is centered on you.

Mother’s Sorrow is an overland set that you can easily farm for in Deshaan on your own. If you are eager to get ahold of the set and have Gold to spare, check Guild Traders as well. Bare in mind that this gear setup was built this way to provide an easy upgrade path from Mother’s Sorrow to Medusa.

Law of Julianos is a staple Crafted Set for all beginner Magicka DPS builds that provides great boosts to your Max Magicka, Critical Chance, and Spell Damage. Bare in mind that this gear setup was built this way to provide an easy upgrade path for both False God’s Devotion and (Perfected) Crushing Wall.

Alternative Sets

Easy to obtain | Challenging to obtainHard to obtain

Burning Spellweave is great if you are looking to replace Law of Julianos before hunting for your Trial Sets, this set is a good stepping stone with even some viability in late game content as well. However, farming the Inferno Staves can take a lot of time which would be better spent farming Maelstrom Arena or a Trial for gear with Minor Slayer. The main drawback of Burning Spellweave is that it is capped at 67% uptime in a best case scenario.

Slimecraw is perfect for solo content and Dungeons with three DPS in the group instead of a Healer. Using this Monster Set in a Dungeon with a Healer that is properly utilizing Combat Prayer is redundant since you will be granted the Minor Berserk passive anyway.

Iceheart will be purely used for when you need increased survivability. It does not provide as much damage as your other options when it comes to Monster Sets, but the Damage Shield you gain can save you in a pinch.

Skills

Front Bar

Crystal Fragments should be activated only when procced and takes priority as it deals a lot of damage and can proc multiple times in a row. Due to Sorcerer passives, this skill provides Minor Prophecy to you and your group members for 20 seconds after being cast. Dealing damage with the projectile also heals you.

Daedric Prey is to only be reapplied after the duration runs out. Otherwise the timer will reset and it will not deal damage. Daedric Prey will increase the damage dealt by your Volatile Familiar and the Daedroth spawned by Maw of the Infernal.

Elemental Weapon is the strongest Magicka cost spammable. It increases Light Attack damage, so you must weave to deal damage with it. Slotting this skill on the Front Bar and being the appropriate rank in the Psijic Order skill line will grant you a Damage Shield while blocking.

Volatile Familiar deals really good damage. However, when you activate the special ability it becomes one of the strongest AoE DoT skills available that also stuns on the final hit, great for taking out groups of enemies in Dungeons. Must be slotted on both bars to remain active.

Inner Light provides extra Magicka on the Front Bar which will increase overall damage. Also grants you Major Prophecy, but you would also get this from Essence of Spell Power potions if using them.

Ultimate: Greater Storm Atronach is a very strong Ultimate that has a long duration, hits hard, and provides a powerful synergy. Upon activation, it stuns enemies in the area and targets an enemy for 28 seconds, great boss encounter Ultimate. The synergy is best used by another DPS because it grants Major Berserk, increasing damage done by 10%. Double Slotted for an easier flowing rotation and 2% increased Spell Damage on both bars from Sorcerer passives.

Back Bar

Unstable Wall of Elements is your most important DoT skill to keep active at all times, as without it, you will miss out on the bonus damage provided by the (Crushing Wall) Maelstrom Inferno Staff.

Lightning Flood is a strong AoE DoT skill that pairs very well with Unstable Blockade as they have the same duration. It also offers a strong burst Synergy to your group.

Critical Surge is important to keep active as it is your primary source of Health sustain, and if you are using the generic Essence of Magicka potions, your source of Major Sorcery. This skill is a flex spot, if you would prefer more damage and are using Essence of Spell Power potions, slot Mystic Orb instead.

Channeled Acceleration is another important skill to keep active throughout the fight. When activated, it will provide Minor Force, which is a very strong buff. The buff lasts for 36 seconds, but be sure to activate it again when there is about 2 seconds left on the timer to get the best possible uptime.

Volatile Familiar deals really good damage. However, when you activate the special ability it becomes one of the strongest AoE DoT skills available that also stuns on the final hit, great for taking out groups of enemies in Dungeons. Must be slotted on both bars to remain active.

Alternative Skills

Bound Aegis

Bound Aegis (Morph of Bound Armor) from the Daedric Summoning skill line grants 8% Max Magicka, Minor Resolve, and 2% more Spell Damage while slotted. If you are doing content that requires you to block damage, activating this skill beforehand will mitigate 10% of the damage. If using Essence of Spell Power potions, I would strongly recommend slotting this on the Front Bar instead of Inner Light.

Elemental Rage

Elemental Rage (Morph of Elemental Storm) from the Destruction Staff skill line would be used over Greater Storm Atronach when you require high burst AoE damage. This Ultimate should only be used in this case specifically, as Greater Storm Atronach has amazing Single Target damage and provides another DPS with a very powerful buff through the synergy. Place on the Back Bar so that you still get the Spell Damage increase on the Front Bar.

Dark Conversion

Dark Conversion (Morph of Dark Exchange) from the Dark Magic skill line is perfect for when you require more sustain. Channeling a Heavy Attack is slow and can sometimes miss your target if they dodge, wasting time. Slotting Dark Conversion avoids this issue, providing a burst of Health and Magicka upon activation and more Magicka over time. The main drawback of this skill is that it costs Stamina.

Mystic Orb

Mystic Orb (Morph of Necrotic Orb) from the Undaunted skill line is a strong AoE damage skill, great for Dungeons. It offers a group synergy that deals high burst damage and the group member that activates the orb will receive Magicka or Stamina, whichever their dominant resource is. This skill can replace Critical Surge or Channeled Acceleration, depending on your situation.

Crushing Shock

Crushing Shock (Morph of Force Shock) from the Destruction Staff skill line is a great alternative spammable to use when you require a ranged interrupt. It is also useful if you personally find that Elemental Weapon is too clunky or too unreliable for whatever reason you may have (ping, FPS, etc).

Empowered Ward

Empowered Ward (Morph of Conjured Ward) from the Daedric Summoning skill line is a great Damage Shield when you require more survivability. While active, the shield grants you and your group with Minor Intellect, increasing your Magicka Recovery by 20%. If you feel like you need a Damage Shield, replace Critical Surge on the Back Bar.

Champion Points

Below is a general overview for CP810

The Mage Constellation

The current allocation of Mage Champion Points is optimized for strong Light Attacks and Direct Damage. You have a healthy mix of Direct Damage and Area of Effect skills, benefiting from Master-at-Arms and Thaumaturge respectively. Magicka DPS no longer need to invest any points in Spell Erosion as they can easily achieve the goal for character penetration (5850) with an optimized group. If your Tank is not using Alkosh, you may need to invest some points here.

The Thief Constellation

The current allocation of Thief Champion Points is optimized for high sustain and good survivability. Your Heavy Attacks will also give a considerable amount of Magicka back if necessary and you do not have Dark Conversion slotted. Points spent into Warlord, Sprinter, Tumbling, and Shadow Ward ensures you can be agile on the battlefield when you need to be. If you find that you need to break free more often than blocking or roll dodging, you can always shift the points around yourself.

Divider_DPS

Rotation

Below you will find a Dynamic rotation. This is when you activate your skills accordingly, depending on the situation and duration of your skills. It yields the best possible DPS and resource management but is harder to master. Expect to see a Static rotation at some point in the future.
LA = Light Attack

Pre-buff with Critical Surge and Channeled Acceleration (If using).

Begin combat on the Back Bar:
LA > Volatile Familiar > LA > Lightning Flood > LA > Unstable Blockade > Bar Swap >
LADaedric Prey > LA > Elemental Weapon until Crystal Fragments proc or DoT skills need to be applied to the target again.

Notes

Crystal Fragments should always be top priority when it procs. Never channel this ability.

While in a group, be sure to summon your Greater Storm Atronach slightly away from the group. This is strictly done to allow you and your group to have full view of the battlefield. The atronach is huge and can block the vision of the Tank especially.

If parsing, ensure that your Greater Storm Atronach or Elemental Rage is ready and cast it before Unstable Blockade when beginning.
