Magicka Nightblade

Greymoor Patch

Magicka Nightblade is known for its high skill requirement due to the dynamic rotation needed to play well with this style. Their strength is in Single Target Damage, with only one Area of Effect (AoE) Damage over Time (DoT) skill. It falls behind on compared to other Classes in AoE.

In the Greymoor patch, Magicka Nightblades are considered one of the lowest parsing Classes. However, if you can master it, you can outperform the top rated Classes in the current META.

Increases your Health Recovery by 100. Increases Stamina and Magicka Recovery by 85.

Increases your Max Health, Magicka, and Stamina by 825

Increases your Critical Hit Damage and Healing by 10%. Reduces your detection radius by 3m.

Dark Elf

Damage / Survivability

Increase Max Magicka and Max Stamina by 1875

Increases your Flame Resistance by 2310, gain immunity to the Burning status effect.

Increases your Weapon and Spell Damage by 258

High Elf – High Elves make great Magicka DPS for every Class as they have the best yield for skill damage. However, with most builds you will fail to utilize the first part of the first passive you receive due to rarely using abilities with cast or channel times. The second portion of that passive does offer a decent amount of sustain, so it’s still very worth it to spend the points.

Khajiit – Khajiit are highly recommended for Magicka Nightblades. They are great for Stamina and Magicka builds alike but Nightblades benefit the most from the Critical Hit Damage passive due to the Class having increased Critical Hit Chance and also receiving a bonus to Critical Hit Damage. In total, for being a Khajiit and a Nightblade alone, you will receive an additional 20% Critical Hit Damage. Khajiit passives also boost all of your resource pools, which is added survivability while also increasing your overall sustain.

Dark Elf – Dark Elves still provide great damage to Magicka DPS builds and can compete with High Elves even though they offer no sustain benefits. The extra Stamina, Flame Resistances, and Burning Status Effect immunity bonuses allow you stay alive more reliably, especially as a Vampire.

It’s best to invest all available points into Magicka, this is because more than just your resource pools are affected by your Attributes. Your Max Magicka also increases how much damage your skills do in combat, and can be seen on the skill card. If you find that you need more Health, try using a Health Glyph on a piece of armor.

Perhaps the most important takeaway is that your Attributes are impacted by your Champion Level, and will continue to increase until CP300.

Consumables

Blue CP150-160 Food

Blue CP150-160 Food is a crafted food in ESO, and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. This food is best if you already have great sustain, as it will boost your Health and Magicka stats higher than Epic quality foods.

Clockwork Citrus Filet

Clockwork Citrus Filet is a crafted food in ESO, and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. This food is best used and perhaps only used in Veteran Trials due to its high cost. It is a min/max food only as it does not offer much more than Witchmother’s Potent Brew.

Witchmother's Potent Brew

Witchmother’s Potent Brew is a crafted drink in ESO, and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. This is a great all around food for Dungeons or Trials as it provides a great boost to your Health, Magicka, and Magicka Recovery stats.

Essence of Magicka

Essence of Magicka potions are generic potions found in ESO as they can drop from a variety of sources. You will often come across plenty of these during a regular play session. Use these during non-Veteran content to help you get into the habit of using a potion on cooldown.

Essence of Spell Power

Essence of Spell Power potions are crafted potions in ESO, and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. Use these during Veteran content to sustain and provide yourself with necessary buffs.

Useful Skills

Blood for Blood

Blood for Blood (Morph of Eviserate) from the Vampire skill line is currently the strongest spammable for Magicka DPS and is available to all Classes. Due to the skill costing Health, your Magicka sustain is increased dramatically.

Elemental Weapon

Elemental Weapon (Morph of Imbue Weapon) from the Psijic Order skill line is the best spammable to use for high Single Target Damage at range. However, this skill mas more room for error.

Force Pulse

Force Pulse (Morph of Force Shock) from the Destruction Staff skill line is the best spammable to use when you require Cleave Damage. Due to the skill damaging nearby enemies that have a status effect applied to them; Burning, Concuss, or Chilled.

Harness Magicka

Harness Magicka (Morph of Annulment) from the Light Armor skill line is a great Damage Shield for when you need more survival. While it’s active, it also restores Magicka every time you are damaged, increasing our Magicka Sustain slightly.

Swallow Soul

Swallow Soul (Morph of Strife) from the Siphoning skill line is the best spammable to use when you require increased Survival. While using this skill as a spammable, the self healing is good enough to sustain yourself during most fights.

  • Zaan currently offers the best Single Target Damage available to Magicka DPS, however, it is unable to target the Dragon Gods in Sunspire. Because of this, having one alternate piece for those boss fights such as Grundwulf or Slimecraw would increase your Spell Critical, and you would not be wasting a Set Bonus.
  • If you’re looking for a more rounded Monster Set without giving up that much damage, use Maw of the Infernal.

Skills

Front Bar

Blood for Blood – A very high damaging spammable that costs Health, yet easy to sustain on a Magicka Nightblade.

Siphoning Attacks – Provides increased sustain to keep rotation up 100% of the time. Needed for Health sustain when using Blood for Blood.

Merciless Resolve – A buff that also allows you to activate a very powerful shot after Light/Heavy Attacking during the duration.

Impale – Execute ability. Used instead of Blood for Blood when an enemy is at and below 25% Health for 300% more damage.

Inner Light – Extra Magicka on Front Bar which will increase overall damage.

Ultimate: Incapacitating Strike – Provides increased sustain to keep rotation up 100% of the time. Also provides a boost to your Critical Chance while slotted.

Back Bar

Barbed Trap – Used in boss fights for Minor Force. If the boss fight requires you to be a distance, use Channeled Acceleration.

Mystic Orb – A very strong AoE DoT skill with a burst damage Synergy.

Unstable Wall of Elements – A strong AoE DoT skill used to utilize the Maelstrom Staff set bonus.

Twisting Path – A strong AoE DoT skill. Also provides Major Expedition to anyone passing through.

Dark Shade – Long lasting summon with good damage. Also applies Minor Maim to any enemy hit by the Shade.

Ultimate: Soul Tether – This Ultimate is never used. It is slotted for a passive, increasing Max Magicka.

Dungeons

Dungeons feature large groups of enemies that are typically tougher than others found in Overland content.
Many bosses have unique mechanics that need to be managed by the whole group.
Each Dungeon has a Normal and Veteran mode. We’ll be focused on Veteran Dungeons, however, much of this guide applies to Normal Trials.

Champion Points

Below is a general overview for CP810

The Mage Constellation

The current allocation of Mage Champion Points is optimized for strong Light Attacks. Using Blood for Blood or Elemental Weapon in conjunction with this set up provides the strongest damage output. However, using a spammable such as Force Pulse or Swallow Soul offers less room for error. The higher than usual Spell Erosion value is to meet the standard 5850 Spell Penetration character stat needed now that Infused Torug’s Pact is less commonly used in groups.

The Thief Constellation

The current allocation of Thief Champion Points is optimized for good survivability. Being able to avoid damage with lower Roll Dodge cost and aiding your Tanks with Bash some targets will make many fights easier. Especially in fights that require Bash mechanics.

Useful Sets

Below is a list of alternate gear sets for Magicka Nightblade
Easy to obtain | Challenging to obtainHard to obtain

Notes

New Moons Acolyte – The best crafted set for DPS, offering a solid all around boost to both Stamina and Magicka based characters alike. Use over Law of Julianos if you can manage the 5% cost increase to see higher damage output.

Burning Spellweave – A great set to start replacing your beginner gear. However the staff can take a long time to farm.

Master Architect – Extremely deadly in Dungeons and Trials for Magicka Nightblades as it provides yourself and other members of your group with Major Slayer when you use an Ultimate. Since you have a very cheap Ultimate for boss fights along with Catalyst Passive and Soul Harvest for fast Ultimate regeneration.

(Perfected) False God’s Devotion – If you’re unable to obtain Master Architect from Halls of Fabrication, False God’s Devotion is a great alternative.

(Perfected) Mantle of Siroria – While this set looks great, it’s very situational as you’re missing out on a lot of damage if you can’t keep the stacks high. Highly recommended in Sunspire.

Iceheart – A solid set for soloing content or starting out. Offers some Spell Critical, a hefty Damage Shield, and some AoE damage. Only use in late game if you require increased Survival as wearing this set will reduce your damage.

Maw of the Infernal – If you can’t quite manage to obtain Zaan yet, try getting your hands on this set instead. Maw of the Infernal boasts a high proc chance with a potential 100% uptime on the Daedroth.

Slimecraw – Great for solo content or running Dungeons with 3 DPS instead of a Healer. Running this set in a Dungeon with a Healer is redundant as they are likely providing you and your group with Minor Berserk from Combat Prayer.

Symphony of Blades – Only use if your group is struggling with sustain in a Dungeon and your Healer or Tank does not yet have this set.

Grundwulf – Typically only used on a Magicka Nightblade for the 1pc bonus with Zaan during boss fights in Sunspire, as Zaan is not able to target the Dragons.

Divider_DPS

Rotation

There are two types of rotations for Magicka Nightblades:
The Static rotation is a set of skills and actions in which you follow after a certain amount of time.
The Dynamic rotation is when you activate your skills accordingly, dependent on the situation.

Below you will find a general guide for Dungeons.

Static / Dynamic

Step 1:    Merciless Resolve > Light Attack > Dark Shade / Crippling Grasp (If Using) > Bar Swap >

Step 2:    Light Attack  > Siphoning Strikes > Light Attack > Barbed Trap > Light Attack > Unstable Blockade > Light Attack > Twisting Path > Bar Swap >

Step 3:    Light Attack (If not using Siphoning Strikes) > Bow Proc > Light Attack > Spammable until Bow Proc or reapply DoT skills.

A Static rotation would result in less resource management due to casting some skills early.

A Dynamic rotation would result in higher resource management and damage due to casting skills on cooldown.
Using a Dynamic rotation also results in bar swapping more frequently.

Notes

Use Ultimate before drinking potions to ensure best up time.

Use Incapacitating Strikes or Soul Harvest when DoT skills are up and you’re ready to proc Assassin’s Will or spam Elemental Weapon.

If parsing, ensure your Destruction Staff Ultimate is ready, drink a potion, wait until 35 seconds are left on cooldown.
