ESO Empire

Warden Tank

Greymoor Patch

Tanking in ESO is different from a lot of other MMORPGs in that there are no AoE Taunts, no Threat to maintain, and you are more than just a Health sponge. You must be able to maintain your own resources and buffs while also buffing your group, and debuffing your enemies.

Warden Tanks use the power of nature to provide many strong buffs and utility to the group while also having great sustain. Wardens provide great heals and resistances by way of Major Resolve and Minor Toughness. Warden Tank is a fun and simple Class to play but lacks Damage Shields (except from Range Attacks) so you must rely on a large Health pool and HoTs to keep you alive.

Since Wardens have amazing sustain, there is no need to put points across Magicka and Stamina like most other Tanks. This is because of the Tri-Stat Glyphs and the skill Balance, which is safe to use due to Minor Toughness from the Maturation Passive and either morphs of Betty Netch to give you strong resource recovery. Perhaps the most important takeaway is that your Attributes are impacted by your Champion Level, and will continue to increase until CP300.

Purple CP150-160 Food

Purple CP150-160 Food is crafted food in ESO, and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. This food is best used if you want large resource pools. In Dungeons and Trials that you have a Healer providing Shards or Orbs, you may find this food more useful.

Bewitched Sugar Skulls

This food is best used if you want large resource pools and you can afford it. If you are a Vampire Tank, you will not benefit as much from this food. In Dungeons and Trials that you have a Healer providing Shards or Orbs, you may find this food more useful.

Witchmother's Potent Brew

Witchmother’s Potent Brew is a crafted drink in ESO, and can only be found otherwise in Guild Stores crafted by another player. This is a food if you require more Magicka sustain, only run this food if you are not using The Atronach Mundus Stone.

Essence of Magicka

Useful Skills

Razor Caltrops

Razor Caltrops (Morph of Caltrops) from the Assault skill line would only be used in cases where both of your DPS are Stamina Based. This skill is a very strong Crowd Control ability while also applying Major Fracture to all enemies in the area, allowing Stamina DPS to shred through adds quickly.

Replenishing Barrier

Replenishing Barrier (Morph of Barrier) from the Support skill line offers many stacking Damage Shields for your entire group while also providing yourself with some additional benefits. Most times you will be using Aggressive Horn, but in some cases where your group needs high survival, Replenishing Barrier is the way to go.

Balance

Balance (Morph of Equilibrium) from the Mages Guild skill line is an alternate way to grant yourself the Major Resolve buff while also gaining some Magicka. This skill costs Health but it doesn’t stop there, it also cuts your Healing Done and Damage Shield strength in half for 4 seconds. Only use this skill if you have poor Magicka Recovery.

Energy Orb

Energy Orb (Morph of Necrotic Orb) from the Undaunted skill line is often used by Healers. It’s a very strong group heal as it moves slow and ticks every 0.5 seconds. It’s also used for its synergy, replenishing resources to allies who activate it. As a Tank, you would usually only run this skill if running with three DPS instead of two DPS and one Healer.

Efficient Purge

Efficient Purge (Morph of Purge) from the Support skill line is a high cost ability that allows you to remove Negative Effects from yourself and your group. While this skill is not run often, it’s recommended due to being irreplaceable in the areas it’s needed, such as Halls of Fabrication. It has use in some Dungeons and other Trials as well to purge strong Flame and Poison DoTs.

Dungeons feature large groups of enemies that are typically tougher than others found in Overland content.

Champion Points

Below is a general overview for CP810

The Mage Constellation

The current allocation of Mage Champion Points is optimized for strong Healing. As a Tank, your main job is to buff allies and debuff enemies, however, being able to keep yourself alive through strong self healing goes a long way.

The Thief Constellation

The current allocation of Thief Champion Points is optimized for reducing the cost of Blocking, Bashing, and Breaking Free as you tend to do this a lot during all fights. We have no points into Arcanist or Mooncalf because Warden Tanks have many other ways to sustain. Instead we increase the value of Roll Dodging and Tenacity so we get resources back for Heavy Attacking. As you learn more fights, you will be able time when and when you can and when you can not fit in Heavy Attacks.

Useful Sets

Below is a list of alternate gear sets for all Tanks
Easy to obtain | Challenging to obtainHard to obtain

Notes

Fortified Brass – A great set for starting out, but as you continue to progress with tanking you may find it is too much Armor. Other sets like Ebon Armory and (Perfected) Claw of Yolnahkriin may not offer as much Armor, but offer irreplaceable group buffs.

The Worm’s Raiment – Useful in a heavy Magicka based groups and for Off Tank role in Trials. However, due to this set not being available in Heavy, you must obtain Weapons and Jewelry.

Plague Doctor – A good set to increase your Health by a huge amount. Not the best set a Tank can wear in Dungeons and Trials as you would be giving up valuable group buffs, but good for starting out.

Sentinel of Rkugamz – A solid beginner Monster Set to hunt for as you get more experienced tanking in ESO. Not only is Sentinel of Rkugamz one of the easier Monster Sets to obtain, it’s also useful in late game content since it has a guaranteed activation, giving you a sustain boost to all resource pools.

Rotation

Tanks do not typically follow a rotation except in long boss fights. During large add pulls, you generally want to pre-buff and open with a Movement Speed debuff, then begin to round up all of the ranged enemies. Below you will find a general guide.

Step 1:    Pre-buff with Balance or Ice Fortress then swap to staff. If entering a boss fight and Aggressive Horn is up now is the time to use it!

Step 2:    Range Taunt the most threatening enemy then cast Growing Swarm. Move to a safe position, facing enemies away from the group. Then cast AoE Movement Speed debuff abilities such as Gripping Shards, Time Freeze and/or Razor Caltrops. It is important that the Tank always initiates combat to gain immediate aggression. It is not guaranteed you will get aggression from every enemy in the pull, but it helps a lot.

Step 3:    Apply all AoE debuffs. This includes Elemental Blockade and Overflowing Altar. Using these skills during all fights helps your group deal more damage and heal themselves.

Step 4:    Melee Taunt all threatening adds right away! Any bigger or more deadly enemy on your DPS is asking for them to die. Use Ransack or Pierce Armor to remove their resistances allowing them to be killed much faster. Pull in any ranged enemies with Silver Leash so they are also killed much faster in the AoE.

Step 5:  Ensure your self buffs are applied. Minor Lifesteal from Leeching Vines and Polar Wind for Minor Toughness. Recast Growing Swarm on the strongest enemy to keep them debuffed with Minor Vulnerability.

Step 6:  If the add fight is taking a little longer, make sure Balance or Ice Fortress, Elemental Blockade, Overflowing Altar, Gripping ShardsTime Freeze, and/or Razor Caltrops remain active.

Notes

Razor Caltrops can be used if your DPS are both Stamina based as it applies Major Fracture to all enemies in the area while also reducing their Movement Speed. Stamina based DPS will tear through them very quickly, however, the skill costs Stamina and may be too expensive if running with a very good group.

Keep boss enemies facing away from your group. Many of them have AoE abilities capable of killing your DPS and Healer in one hit.

During boss fights, keep Heroic Slash up at all times (if using). While it benefits you with Minor Heroism, it also applies Minor Maim to your target, decreasing their damage.

In some cases, you may run with a group of 3 DPS. This is usually done in planned groups. If you plan to do something such as this, slot Energy Orb as it is a very strong group heal while also providing your DPS with resources.
